BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — National Cat Day is this Sunday, October 29th. The ASPCA reports that 3.2 million cats are born, surrendered, or abandoned at shelters every year. To celebrate National Cat Day, the Idaho Humane Society says there are multiple ways to support them, whether that is through adoption, fostering, or donations.
Kristine Schellhaas, the communications manager at the Idaho Humane Society says, "You can adopt a very young kitten or you can adopt a cat like India we have very many different types and very many different kinds of needs available right here at the Idaho Humane Society."
India is in renal failure, she is one of the cats on hospice at the shelter, who are looking for special people who are able to home and take care of a sick cat. Along with this, they also have a feral cat program, where cats who aren't as friendly can be adopted as barn cats. On average, the Humane Society adopts between sixty to eighty kittens a week. However, they are expecting an uptick in this number due to kitten season. Schellhaas says. "It's been starting earlier because the temperatures are really nice. And so cats will start going out and breeding.... I have a feeling it's going to be through November this year because the temps have just been tremendous outside.". She says this is also a good reminder to spay and neuter your cats.
This is where the foster program comes in, as many of these new kitten need extra care outside of the shelter. Schellhaas says, "Of course when we have vulnerable kittens coming in there, they're needing a lot of resources....So our fosters take these young kittens into their home and give them that TLC and love."
The Idaho Humane Society says, if you aren't ready to adopt there are still other ways to help. Schellhaas says, "...funding these really important endeavors to take care of animals right here in our communities are a really great way to give back.".
This year, over four thousand cats have made their way into the arms of the Idaho Humane Society. If you want to support them for National Cat Day this year you can click here.
